Glenn Beck’s Rally Makes My Heart Hurt

While Glenn Beck talks ‘Civil Rights’ -on the exact date and location of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech I feel the need to review.

Glenn Beck is the man who said:

“This president, I think, has exposed himself as a guy, over and over and over again, who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture…I’m not saying that he doesn’t like white people, I’m saying he has a problem. He has a — this guy is, I believe, a racist.”

Media Matters has a full round-up of Beck’s racially tinged remarks, because sadly that isn’t the only one.

While I am beyond offended this man and his followers will stand in THAT spot, on THAT day and invoke Dr. King…I am finding it more productive to take a deep breath and not give in to the overwhelming feeling of anger. While I want to yell and scream about being labeled a race baiter for even bringing up Beck’s racially moronic remarks and rhetoric that will have thousands of white people chanting his name…I’m going to again, take a breath…and look at this photo. Because a big smile makes it all better.

Tee hee @pigtailpals

And by the way, yes my daughter is wearing a girl astronaut t-shirt … something Mr. Beck doesn’t appreciate or care about.

So while throngs of Beck’s followers talk civil rights in DC, I am choosing to look to the future. To my daughter. To my son. And to the sanity even they bring to this otherwise ridiculous display of hate and greed.

Mom, that guy seems kinda crazy.

Yes he does baby. Yes, he does.

  1. She’s totally going “come on, you know you wanna smile!” – That right there helps with whatever ails you!!
.-= Cathy´s last blog ..Its Jamie Olivers Food Revolution- Its also my Passion =-.

  2. As my grandmother used to always say, “you just have to consider the source”. When you eliminate various possibilities, what you’re left w/is that Glenn Beck says what he says for attention.

  3. I know we have freedom of speech but maybe we should change it to freedom of speech unless you are a douchebag? Because then we could totally make Glenn Beck shut up. The picture of your daughter made me smile…I wanted to be an astronaut/astrophysicist when I was small.
.-= lanned´s last blog ..Happy Birthday to me =-.

  4. I’m telling you. Quit watching him. He’s going to give you an ulcer. Try some yoga instead. 😉 XXOO

  5. Glenn Beck doesn’t care about little girls wanting to be astronauts!!!! Racist! Homophobe! Warmonger!!!!! We should silence him. He shouldn’t be allowed to use such hate speech about our president. If only we had an unelected group of people working for the gov’t that could decide who can speak in public and what they can say, that would solve a lot of problems in AmeriKKKa. That would eliminate Obama’s hateful opposition and he would be able to get stuff done. YES WE CAN!!!!!!!!!

  6. What frightens me are the uneducated lemmings who follow psychos like Beck and morons like Palin. And then this is the picture of America that the rest of the world sees.

  7. James.. knock it off. Seriously. Go ahead and mock if you like, but you’re just making yourself look stupid. Beck has been racist, homophobic, and sexist yet THOUSANDS are wetting their pants on the mall in DC to see him. What a sad commentary on the state of our nation.

  8. I find it interesting that this event is “okay” and “American” while a Community in the old Burlington Coat factory two blocks from ground zero is intolerant. Hmmmm.

  9. So so true! I just finished a rant because I’m so upset. But then I came to your blog and remember there are awesome and insightful people in this world. As usual, thank you for writing how I feel, but in a much much less angry way then I do.

  10. That man makes me ill. And it makes me so very sad that a certain demographic hangs on his every word.

  11. For our wedding, our Guinea pig is in need of a companion who approaches his level of reasoning and logic. I invited Glenn Beck because Palin was booked.

I’m sorry. That was a horrible joke. I meant no offense to Nibbles, his brethren, or friends of Guinea pigs anywhere. On the flip side, I am comforted that Beck will not comprehend the dig.

  12. what’s upsetting and frightening me more than his bullshit rhetoric/war-mongering/lies/hatred/general asshole-ishness, is his whole ‘we need to take the constitution back’ combined with ‘we need to go to god’. aside from the fact that america isn’t supposed to be about god, let’s all be really honest and admit that he’s talking about jesus. not any jewish god, or allah, or any other diety. jesus.

  13. btw you can get the awesome girl astronaut shirt here! http://www.pigtailpals.com/

  14. How we change it to freedom

  15. What’s more interesting from our perspective about this Glenn Beck phenomenon is that “The Folks in Control,” however one might characterize them in terms of race, status, class, wealth, geographic location or whatever, allowed our current situation to develop over arguably the last 50 – 100 years, and now there are complaints by a vocal group of concerned citizens.

Is it possible, as postulated by some, that the liberal, conservative, progressive, corporate and banking interests, and libertarian POWER FORCES in our society are laughing all the way to the bank, and that we minions with little money and power (the members of the Institute for Applied Common Sense included) are the ones complaining? And that because of new technological advances in communication and the power of the Internet, the voice of the minions is now being disseminated with greater force, essentially saying, “Stop! Enough is enough!”?

Is this arguably populist movement somewhat similar to the one led by “the Great Commoner,” William Jennings Bryan at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th Centuries?

Is what we are experiencing simply the most vocal expression of the perhaps 80% of we citizens at the bottom of the heap?

  16. I try not to pay attention to Beck anymore. I know that he is always there with his rhetoric and the people following him are always there with their rhetoric. They accept what he says because it’s easier than trying to change. It’s always easier to be the person that you always were than to become something different, something better.

Your daughter is adorable, and I love that shirt. 🙂 Very cute. Hopefully, her generation will do a much better job with the world.

  17. About 100 years ago the Friends of Voltaire attributed a statement on free speech that went something like, “I may deplore what you say but I will defent to your death the right to say it.” The Rabbis of the Talmud and beyond take a different view, devoting many chapters of Law and subsequent commentary to Lashon Harah (Evil Tongue) and Richilut (slander of individuals), relying on self-restraint to limit what one says and for what purpose and with what consequences. I think the Sages of Yore realized that in their day and in every day there would be not only people like Mr. Beck who violated those principles but an abundance of people eager to listen and act upon what they heard, irrespective of any incompleteness or distortion of reality.

We are fortunate in America that bigotry has been marginalized in large part because people can and do listen to what should not have been said in the first place, find it abhorrent and diminish the credibility of the speaker, whether Helen Thomas, Mel Gibson, and hopefully as an offshoot of media exposure, Glen Beck.

  18. Glenn who? Hala’s sweet face blocks out all unpleasantness for me. I really enjoy reading about your amazingly clever children Erin, thank you for sharing a slice of your life with us!
