Corruption

Given that I used to be what the kids call a *real* reporter and am now a blogger… (which I think makes me some sort of fake reporter….) I’m headed to Reno, Nevada this week to corrupt speak to Journalism students, at the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno, about the wonders of this *new* media world.

I plan to corrupt speak to them the way I blog…in my pajama bottoms.*

Yes, this IS how I blog

Ok maybe not, but I do plan on letting them know there’s room for everyone as Journalism and reporting find their way in this crazy new world.

I’ll also be at Nevada Interactive Summit if you happen to be in the neighborhood.

The fun doesn’t stop there either…just as soon as I get home, I’ll be turning around to attend and speak at SXSWi in Austin, Texas.

I keep promising Denise I won’t start any wars as I travel around to let everyone know what BlogHer is up to…but if Texas plans on seceding….no promises. Or if Austin let’s me have too much of it’s tequila…Or if I end up outside Austin city limits and Republicans chase me with their pickup trucks and hunting rifles…or if the Texas Board of Education nutjobs show up anywhere…Texas, you annoy me. Wars will be avoided if possible.

…maybe Denise is right….

*the pj thing would make way more sense if you saw the presentation I’m giving on us upstart bloggers living in our parent’s basements….

  1. I’ve been able to speak to upcoming professional as a former reporter too. It’s kind of fun, actually. For me, I converted to the darkside of PR, which I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy and work in for a while now.

The important thing to convey is that journalism is changing. The tools and platforms exist that make anybody a journalist. That said, I still think they should at least read and know the journalist’s code of ethics (http://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp) when they tell their stories. A blog is a great platform to share information. But by adopting the title of “journalist,” they are committing themselves to selflessly informing their readership.

  2. It’s such an important message! Sometimes I think I was the world’s biggest chump for majoring in print journalism in college, but there’s no reason that knowledge and those skills can’t translate to the Web. Realizing that has been important for me as I work to reinvent myself.

Here in NYC the city announced yesterday that bloggers will now be eligible for press credentials. We’re headed in the right direction.

  4. Well it’s kind of hard to avoid war when you say things like “Texas, you annoy me.” – thems fightin words (just trying to maintain the uneducated steryotype), Woman! I don’t have a rifle or a pick up truck, but I do love my state and if you are a regular at SxSW (which I’m fairly certain you are), you do too – come on admit it!

This is why I have warned my husband I am moving out of Texas. People on the outside think we are all a bunch of pick-up driving, rifle totin’ nut jobs. I get just as frustrated as you are but please believe me we are not all CRAZY!! As soon as we give Rick Perry the boot (soon please God) maybe the normal people can be proud of Texas again. Please come enjoy your visit and if you find yourself in a war, call me I got your back!

  6. That Rick Perry thing didn’t work out too well yesterday… 🙁

  7. As a Texan, I think our Board of Education annoys me more than anything else you’ve listed. Is your SXSWi talk also a new media talk? (Nerve mind, I found it on the schedule.) Will you be in town long enough for a meet-up with those of us in Austin?

We still have a chance to get rid of Perry – he only won the Republican ticket – he will run against Bill White (Democrat). I am keeping my fingers crossed!!

  9. I’m thinking that given how relatively well Texas has fared during this recession, Perry is unlikely to be unseated.

  10. Hey Ren…I’m in Friday-Monday – see you there?

  11. You’re gonna be at sx?! What the shit?!

Ugh. This state. So funny that the capital and its ultimate dbag, Perry, are situated in a completely antithetical Texas city.

You just watch them city limits, purdy ladeh. Most of the gun-totin’ wackos avoid the ATX.

  12. If I send you a whole quarter, will you play the slots for me in Reno? We can split the winnings.

  13. Uh oh. My husband and I are looking into moving to Texas (Dallas area) at the end of the year from NY. I just started doing my research and I’m curious to find out the problems with the BOE.

  14. It would have to be Friday for me as we’re leaving town Saturday morning.

  15. Great presentation this a.m. at #nim10! Don’t know if you won big on the Star Wars slots in Vegas – but we love the shout out for Planned Parenthood! Maybe you’ll start a viral donor frenzy … Funny: Sarah Palin as the patron GOP for bloggers and Planned Parenthood!

  16. We loved having you, and like any smart person would, the students enjoyed being corrupted. Texas can #suckit 😉
