From The Blogosphere to Iraq, with xoxo

On September 11th, 2007 the kids and I will be at a local park. They won’t be on the slide and the won’t be digging in the sand. They will be in a tiny rec room coloring pictures for their uncle and other soldiers stationed in Iraq.

I want you to join us.

I’d like to show my brother-in-law how cool you and your kids are…and that we think of him, and his colleagues. He won’t be home for another year. That’s a long time to be away from your two little ones, your pregnant wife, and your friends.

Leave me a comment or send me an email ( and I will provide you with his address. If your kids are back in school, maybe just send the artwork they made on Tuesday. Have your older kids write a letter. You can use a regular stamp and you can drop it in the mail. Its really not much to ask.

Spend September 11th in a constructive way. Please.

  1. This is a great thing for you do.

I was just discussing with my almost-brother-in-law, who is just home from Bagdahd and now living in a small, progressive college town and learning how to handle the idealistic kids and the reality of living in a time of war.

I hope so much that the lessons this country learned when troops came home from Vietnam include that it’s okay to not support the war, but CRUCIAL to support the troops.

On a personal note, that day in 2001 still cuts me like I knife. I can still hear the sirens, still taste that dust, still see the scars on my feet from running. I don’t when or if those memories will ever fade or get easier. But I do hope to be able to raise Henry in a world where we love one another and peace is a reality.

May your brother-in-law come home safely. And soon.

  2. I’d love to do this.

  3. Is there a way that we can get the names of his fellow soldiers? You know, the ones that are deployed with him?? I just thought that it would be nice to do this for all of them, and not just one or two of them. Let me know what you come up with. I had also thought about trying to set up a pen pal with a service member for my sons second grade class…Maybe your brother in laws unit would like to participate in that.

  4. Please email me the info. We homeschool, and will be discussing 9-11 in a much different way than they would in public school, and think this would be a great activity.

  5. I would love to do it. my son is almost two but he does some wicked finger painting. let me know…

  6. Please send the address to Dawson and me. We’re sending letters and phone cards through our church, I’d love to send one to your brother-in-law, too — that is if he can receive them, some soldiers can’t and I still don’t know why.

  7. I’m in! Send me his info… Lil’ BoheMia would surely love to draw him something!

  8. Excellent idea, Erin. Go ahead and shoot me his address, and I’ll be sending some to some of our friends and relatives that are also there. It’s so hard for those men and women over there, the least we can do is try to make them remember who they’re fighting for.

  9. I don’t have kids to make artwork, but I would love to send a postcard or something.

  10. How did I miss this?!? My kids and I have been doing the thing for quite a while now, and they are always disappointed that they don’t know the actual person they are sending things to. I would love to have an actual picture of a person (I’m assuming you could help me with that?) to show them and tell them who they are thanking.

  11. I just want you to know that today, my sons class of 25 students are writing letters thanking the soldiers for being who they are. My son is going to draw Cody a picture of a tank. (His idea not mine) Anyhow, there will be at least 25 letters in the mail tomorrow morning. Thanks for the idea!!!!

  12. Please send me the address. I might be able to get my son’s whole preschool class to do something today.
