Not Using Me.Dium.Com

Why?

I’m sorry, but this is your marketing?

Parody. Still.

Really?

Because what I need is yet another social networking service run by frat boys.

Hey wait-can you make me a hottie too? Do you have an Oregon Trail application? I can’t wait to show this to MY KIDS, because you know we mommybloggers just love to share everything with our kids.

Maybe I need to write an open letter to start up companies to grow the hell up, because their viral video marketing is just SOOOOOO professional and classy.

I guess they didn’t watch my show tonight to learn all about how women are the majority of web users.

Their loss.

  1. well you can certainly see who they expect to be their target demographics…and it’s not us…and that’s fine with me! me.not.dum.dum.

  2. That could possibly be the lamest marketing pitch I’ve ever seen. Seriously.

  3. Queen of Spain says:

Ok, so glad it’s not just me. I just watched it on THEIR HOMEPAGE

  4. Wow. That’s kind of an awkward marketing strategy. I’m not a college gal anymore…this video seems to be targeting that demographic.

  5. Hey all,
I’m on the marketing team for Me.dium and trust me, we hear ya! This video is extremely demographic specific but how do you speak to college students if not by diving into their world right?

The story behind this video is actually pretty unique. This year, Me.dium was lucky enough to have an Ad class from the University of Colorado study Me.dium as their “client.” Part of their assignment was to script us some viral vids. So, we thought we’d show them some love and get it produced as a big thanks! Here’s our blog featuring their work: http://blogme.dium.com/content/2008/05/medium-your-world-online/

However, as the class points out, Me.dium is what you make it … its YOUR world online no matter who we’re marketing to at the time. We do a lot of work with Mommy bloggers and Mommy social networks like Poshmama who swear by Me.dium and we LOVE them for it πŸ™‚ You are a very prominent group online and from what the poshmamas have shown us, you can go to town with a good social surfing session in Me.dium. We hope not to offend you by our “fratastic” video and if you have any thoughts on “One of the many uses for Me.dium” (for Moms!) I’d love to hear them as we get started on our second shoot.
Check out our poshmama tours here: http://blogme.dium.com/content/2008/04/click-to-get-that-look-for-less/

Friend me on Me.dium to chat. My screen name is gfigg.

  6. Whoa. I can’t even fathom that I would have enjoyed that appeal when I was a college girl. And I grimace at the notion that college guys are all over this service.

  7. LOL. Thanks for sharing that Erin. How funny. We may have to ridicule them on our site as well πŸ˜‰

  8. Im sorry but this is very bad marketing! I dont really think that this fits me.diuem.

  9. Wow, that is awful. I’m not sure if I’m more offended by the ad, or that Brittany Spears “Toxic” is her favorite song. Yuck.

  10. Targeted trash is what I call it. What a mess! Yikes – time for those boys to go back to Mkting 101.

  11. Queen of Spain says:

Thanks for stopping by Ginerva- A few questions though.

If this is for a specific demographic, why is it on your home page?

Also- should we then conclude all college students are sluts?

Also, should I conclude it’s not me.dium’s fault because really, it was a group of students? I applaud the effort to include the community, however I would suggest you take the company’s reputation as a whole into consideration before approving your next marketing campaign.

  12. I admit, I’m 10 years out of college…but I can’t imagine this appealing to me or my friends in college, either. And it goes way beyond values, it just isn’t appealing.

College students may have produced it, but I shudder to think that this is a valid reflection of their world.

  13. Take my take here with a grain of salt (I’m a 23 year-old guy), but I think it’s a pretty good video: edgy and funny while still staying true to the point (which is to highlight features). I think me.dium is having some trouble coming off as young and as new tech. This might not do it, but it might help.

  14. The idea here was to feature a script given to us by our demographic. I say this not to rid Me.dium of responsibility for its implications but, instead, to push the idea that the video does in fact resonate with the college crowd.

No, this video is not implying every college student behaves this way.. in fact the hope is that they don’t but that they can have a laugh at the stereotype.

You make a valid point about our positioning the video on our homepage and its important to us that we receive this feedback. We thought we’d show the class some real love by getting it up there. They spent a great deal of time studying our messaging to college students and we are extremely thankful for it.

I thank Brian for writing on behalf of the demographic but its certainly important to note the reaction your blog received regarding the homepage placement. I honestly appreciate your feedback and your reader’s comments – we’re listening.

  15. Queen of Spain says:

Very glad to see you are listening. πŸ™‚

  16. Queen of Spain says:

    um, since you are listening….

  17. I think this video hits the demographic perfectly. Although it’s a stereotype, it resonates well with this age group. The video needs to be see as something that they relate with, and it does it exactly that. As a college student, I know that my peers will chuckle and enjoy this portrayal of the sometimes wild college lifestyle. A few people commented saying this wasn’t their college experience, and for some it wasn’t, but from my perspective (currently in college) I know that nearly everyone has experienced the awkward morning after.

Given that this video may not apply to some of the users of Me.dium, it is still a creative attempting that shows a great comedic understanding of the targeted demo.

  18. Thanks for engaging. This is an awesome discussion!

The decision to use that word is consistent with everything discussed above.

On a side note, I’ve just found out I’m heading out to BlogHer ’08! Any chance of running into each other or is your schedule insane?

  19. wow. epic fail.

  20. Wow..you people really hated this video.
I glad no one said the hated the narrater voice over guy…”Thats Me”…fun to read this stuff. How did you like the voice?
