The Virtual World of 5-year olds

Without any effort or thought, a handful of Kindergartners just walked into their computer lab, turned on their monitors, opened up a browser, found the bookmark tab, and began playing games.

I just watched it at my son’s school. It was second nature. It was without adult supervision. It was part of the routine.

I fully realize our children are wired. What didn’t occur to me was the ease of it all. The ‘daily life,’ same as -putting on a pair of pants and breathing air- there was to the whole thing.

This isn’t just the next generation, it’s the next Renaissance.

My kids became addicted to Club Penguin. I have to limit their use of it. Adults have World of Warcrack & I see it as our children are being trained for the future of MMORPG's.

at first I thought maybe it was just *my* kids due to the overly wired household...but....no

My 2 year old already knows how to open my DS, take out the stylus, and write on the screen. He has no idea how to play the games, but it amazes me that he even knows how to turn it on. It is such a different world for kids now.

It’s only a matter of time before my four year old’s knowledge of the computer surpasses mine. I give it two years!

Wow, I don’t even let mine type yet. Umm, guess I better get on the wired kids ball before they’re left behind.

They are completely wired. Here too.

It was a shock the first time I heard my daughter (then 5) advise someone to “just google it”, for more information. I have since gotten over it. Perhaps I can learn things from her.

I love this! I can’t wait to see what they come up with.

I just remember sitting in on a beginning computer class full of senior citizens — nothing against them, I think it was great for them to learn something new, but just the level of intimidation they had toward the computer was something to behold for me. I’ve always viewed a computer as a place for exploration. I’ve never had the kind of fear they experienced when clicking on unknown icons. For many of them, they were so concerned with learning the “right” way to do something — the proper protocol and/or process. I love to think that humans and the machines they use are both becoming more intuitive.

This one of many reasons that I am thankful that I am married to a computer geek. My son will grow up wired, and it will hopefully open many wonderful doors for him, but hopefully, Dad will always be one step ahead…checking the doors for boogymen first!

I now that kids can be trying but quite honestly even though I want to pull my hair out 90% of the time I cant imagine life without my copious amounts of cafine, no sleep and hairstandingonend crazyiness!

Have they found out about Club Penguin or Poptropica? It’s like Crack.
