Leon Panetta? Huh? What Year Is This?

crossposted at BlogHer

Well excuse me while I put my flannel back on and rip my jeans. Apparently the 90’s are back.

The New York Times reports Leon Panetta, former Clinton White House chief of staff, will be named CIA director.

“Democratic officials said Mr. Obama had selected Mr. Panetta for his managerial skills, his bipartisan standing, and the foreign policy and budget experience he gained under President Bill Clinton. Mr. Panetta has himself been a sharp critic of the agency’s interrogation practices.”

But let’s be honest, most of us are scratching our heads over this one. Panetta has limited intelligence experience, at best. And while President-elect Obama is touting the pick (unofficially) as someone who would not tell him what he wants to hear, but what he needs to know…I can’t help but turn on some grunge music and wonder how this position came to be filled.

Was this part of the great Clinton negotiation?

Is this an old school pick or an unusual pick meant to push change in the CIA?

Mcjoan at Daily Kos writes, “This appointment is a bit out of left field, but it is encouraging in several ways: Obama wasn’t swayed by the intelligence community’s all-out effort to put a current CIA type into the position–an effort aimed at maintaining and/or justifying Bush policies, including torture. Instead, Obama went for someone with proven management skills, something that it desperately needed in the position. But the best news in all of this–Leon Panetta is a much of a departure from torture as you could want.”

This is a plus, because I land firmly in the “torture sucks” crowd.

However my California Senator Diane Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, seems ticked:

“My position has consistently been that I believe the agency is best served by having an intelligence professional in charge at this time,” she said.

Lez Get Real writes, “From 1997 to 2000 I was employed by the National Security Agency as an analyst and I am getting feed back from those in the know about this appointment and they are saying that many intelligence and defense insiders are up in arms about this… Several top ranked members of the Intelligence Agency have also stated that they would leave their position if Panetta were confirmed.”

Which makes me go…uh oh.

Kathy from Comments From Left Field notes the righties are outraged seeing the pick as an “anti-torture” statement.

However, even if the CIA insiders (and the righties) are pissed, the President is STILL the President, and their job remains to gather intelligence and report TO the President.

Will there be unnecessary pissing matching by the big boys because their guy didn’t get picked? Probably. Will they make life more difficult for the new administration and moan and whine a bit? Probably.

Will they stop doing their job and put our country in danger? I’d hope not.

Gwynne is going to BlogHer ’09 (and so is someone else)

Congrats to Gwynne. I’m registering you for BlogHer ’09 in Chicago.

Thank you to everyone who participated.

I want to gush for hours about what this means to me, and why I’m doing it…and all about Gwynne. But the best example I can share about the BlogHer community is it never stops there.

Inspired by what I was doing, the wonderful Dawn of Alex Year Two is picking another winner from all your submissions. Yes, that’s right…Gwynne isn’t the only one getting her registration for BlogHer paid in full.

Keep checking Dawn’s site. She’ll be posting the winner soon.

Why? Because that’s just how this community rolls.

Too Wired?

Oh no, I don't have gamer kids at all /eyeroll

My children can easily open a web browser and play games. They can turn on the Wii, the DS, and will ask me to find them the ‘blahblahfill-in-the-blank.com’ they heard about on tv.

They are 3 and 5- years old.

Mom and Dad both use their computers for work and play. So laptops are always open and it’s just a way of life for the adults, so it stands to reason it’s a way of life for the children in the house.

Is this the new standard for families or are we entirely too plugged in?

Don’t get me wrong, there is a very healthy amount of NON-wired play around here. Legos, dolls, imagination run rampant.

So why do I feel guilty when they do plug in?

Is that a throwback to some bygone era where this wasn’t commonplace? Leftover guilt akin to my mother telling me I was sitting too close to the television?

If they are monitored, if their time is monitored, if it’s all well and good…why am I even questioning their wired lives when everything comes with a .com?

Perhaps it’s just like everything else in motherhood: am I doing this right? That nagging, never ending feeling in the back of your brain that you can be better, try harder.

Or maybe we just need to go for a walk.

Starting It Right

2008 was a very good year for me. And I want 2009 to be a very good year for you.

As I read and watched my year in review, I realized much of it was because I became involved in the BlogHer community many moons ago.

So to kick off 2009, I’m giving away 1 (one) full registration to the BlogHer ’09 conference in Chicago.*

I don’t want to give this away to someone who is already going, has the means to go, or knows they could afford to go if they wanted. I want this registration to be given to someone who would love to go, but really could use the extra help getting there.

To enter, write a post (if you have a blog) and link to this post. Leave me a comment here and let me know you blogged it. If you don’t have a blog, leave a comment on this post.

Tell me:

Why you want to attend BlogHer and how you plan on supporting other women you know and love in 2009.

I reserve the right to choose anyone I want for whatever reason I want. I will give the registration away on January 5th, 2009. That means you have the entire holiday and all weekend to write your post.

Happy New Year

*disclaimer: I am paying for this myself and this is in no way affiliated with my employment with BlogHer

Because 2008 was just…too much

I keep writing and deleting.

I sum up 2008 and then I realize I’ve forgotten something and I start over.

Because I just can’t seem to put into words what 2008 was for me…I’ll will let the videos speak for themselves:

I started the year with Super Tuesday and sitting down with Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

The spring brought me the interview of a lifetime.

And then it was on to both conventions. First the DNC in Denver:

And then the RNC in St. Paul

I was lucky enough to make appearances on CNN and speak with about a gazillion other media outlets.

I also sat on some great panels with some AMAZING women

Yes, 2008 has been a hell of a year. Here’s to 2009 and much more to come.

Again With The Morons

Apparently we’re going to do this again.

Yes, we’ve done this before. Several times. Over here too. Oh and here.

Let’s review:

feeding is not obscene. My kid wiggling his/her head and ‘showing the nipple or areola’ (as Facebook is saying) is not obscene.

My child eating is not porn.

#suckit Facebook

If I have to suffer through barely legal thong-showing asscrack flashers, you can handle my daughter eating breakfast.

That Damn Cat is Evil

Prime example of BAD TECH:

There is a FurReal Friends white cat sitting outside in the car right now.

It’s not allowed in.

It’s not only creeping me out, but it won’t stop meowing and purring.

On Christmas morning my darling daughter will have a fake kitty to play with, that mimics a real life kitty…without the litter box, and I couldn’t be more creeped out by it.

Sure we’ve had the RoboPanda and the TriBot…but…this kitty…it’s just…I don’t know…TOO life like?

I waved my hand in front of it’s face, while it was still in the box, and it blinked and acknowledged me.

I can’t get Chucky out of my head.
